Exploring Cultures Through Literature: A Cross-Cultural Literary Discussion with Semey NIS School, Kazakhstan
A Cross-Cultural Literary Discussion was organized to promote reading and cultural exchange between students of PM SHRI Kendriya Vidyalaya Kanjikode and Semey NIS School, Kazakhstan on 18 February 2024. The session aimed to enhance cross-cultural understanding through storytelling, encourage critical thinking, and strengthen collaboration between educators and students from both countries.

Event Highlights
The session began with a warm welcome extended to all participants. The purpose and significance of the discussion were highlighted, emphasizing the role of literature in cultural exchange.
Representatives from Semey NIS School provided an insightful overview of their institution, including its educational approach and values. They highlighted their emphasis on multilingual education and fostering global perspectives among students.
Educators and students from PM SHRI KV Kanjikode introduced their school, detailing its academic environment, library initiatives, and commitment to nurturing a culture of reading.
Kazakh students presented the tale of Ertostik, a traditional Kazakh fairy tale known for its rich folklore and mythical elements. They elaborated on its themes, including heroism, adventure, and cultural significance. Participants engaged in a discussion about the fairy tale, asking questions about its characters, moral lessons, and cultural context. The interactive session allowed for a deeper understanding of Kazakh storytelling traditions.
Students of KV Kanjikode presented Panchatantra, one of the most celebrated collections of ancient Indian fables. Nehara Praveena Krishna and Thamanna explained its origin, attributed to the scholar Vishnu Sharma, and how it has influenced storytelling across cultures. The tales from Panchatantra emphasize moral values, wisdom, and practical intelligence, often conveyed through animals as protagonists. Arjun S Nair presented the story The Crows and the Snake, drawing attention to the lessons of wit, strategy, and justice embedded in these stories. They also highlighted the global influence of Panchatantra, mentioning how it has been translated into multiple languages and adapted into various cultural narratives worldwide.
The participants engaged in a thought-provoking discussion on the Indian literary work, sharing insights on its interpretation and cultural significance.
The session concluded with a summary of key takeaways. Participants expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to explore diverse literary traditions.
